Motsepe 'sex pest' claim: WCED MEC admits department does not 'vet' NGO staff

Vetting procedures by the Western Cape Education Department have fallen under the spotlight in light of recent allegations against Equal Education boss Tshepo Motsepe.

Last month Motsepe was accused of sexual harassment by women working at the civil rights organisation.

It's a matter of extreme concern for me and I will be writing to Equal Education requesting who he has had access to in the last while.

Debbie Schafter, Western Cape MEC for Education

Speaking to Kieno Kammies on Thursday, Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer is promising to change the way staff are vetted - currently the department itself does not carry out any checks.

We don't do any vetting ourselves and we need to change that. We can't just let people have carte blanche access without putting significant measures in place.

Debbie Schafter, Western Cape MEC for Education

Motsepe denies any wrongdoing, but resigned from Equal Education on April 25. The organisation was unavailable for comment on Wednesday morning.
