MPs to summons ministers over nearly R14bn owed to Eskom

MPs have vowed to summon the inter-ministerial task team assigned to look into the huge debt owed to Eskom.

Scopa says failure to deal with the debt could impact on Eskom's reputation among lenders.

The municipalities in general, and the ones we're talking about who're defaulting, and Eskom, they're both in dire straits. They both need money.

Themba Gordi, Chairperson Scopa

Previously, payment agreements were arranged with the municipalities to prevent electricity cuts, but Eskom maintains some municipalities still didn't pay what was owed.

Municipalities in Gauteng, Free State, North West and Mpumalanga are among the top ten defaulters.
