27% of Western Cape Police could not complete firearm handling competence test

The Department of Community Safety in the Western Cape says it is concerned by the number of police officers who have failed to complete their firearm hadndling competence test.

4 556 police officers in the province have had to return their firearms in the last financial year.

While the group of officers have failed at meeting this requirement, Mireille Wenger, Conduct Committee Chairperson Community Safety in the WC, says administrative issues are a contributing factor.

What is concerning is that there is only one firearm shooting range in the Western Cape and that shooting range is not fully operational because of some safety issues and they are also experiencing a shortage of ammunition.

The next step to now see what is going to be done because the aim is to fix. This is also something that I will be taking up with new police minister.
