Save the Children appeared before Parliament this week to urge MPs to do more to fight violence against children.

A study by Save the Children South Africa has revealed how a violent childhood can be the blueprint for one's adult life.

The organisation appeared before Parliament this week to urge MPs to do more in order to fight violence against children.

It has also called for Treasury to allocate more money to the prevention of child abuse as R238.58-billion was spent on cases involving violence against children in 2015 alone.

Child Protection Manager at Save the Children SA, Dudu Skhosana says children have become more at risk.

We hear it everyday, we see it everyday, children have become more at risk in our society than ever before.

Dudu Skhosana, Child Protection Manager at Save the Children SA

As the study was conducted it was realised that the problem is bigger than we all thought, sexual violence in childhood has very string association with lifetime suicide attempts, substance abuse and all of that. So most of the social ills that we are experiencing in our country at this stage are associated with violence experienced in childhood.

Dudu Skhosana, Child Protection Manager at Save the Children SA

Skhosana says very little to prevention but large sums of money are allocated to response through the justice system.

That is too late.

Dudu Skhosana, Child Protection Manager at Save the Children SA

We wanted Parliament to commit to addressing the issue of violence against children. We want them to hold each other accountable for the violence that is happening in our society. What we are looking to Parliament to do is to allocate enough funding to the prevention of violence.
