Transport Minister Blade Nzimande

The minister briefed the media on his department’s budget on Friday.

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) is losing money like an ATM and he wants to put an end to it.

The minister was briefing the media on his department on Friday.

He has started a clean-up of Prasa by making changes to its board.

Eyewitness News reporter Babalo Ndenze shares some of the changes Nzimande wants to make as well as the minister's spending plans.

He was referring to those specific incidents where money seems to have been wasted and people being paid without doing any work, and the fact that Prasa accounts for a huge chunk of the department's money.

Babalo Ndenze, EWN parliamentary reporter

He has made some progress and placed a lot of emphasis on other entities under his bureaucracy and boards which also require intervention.

Babalo Ndenze, EWN parliamentary reporter

He will be spending 6.4 billion on 125 new trains for Metrorail, R 392 million on Metrorail as well to accommodate 1.5 million passengers on the long-distance mainline passenger service. The agency also plans to spend 1.2 billion over the medium term on maintenance, operations, and inventories...
