Eusebius: 'I think the CEOs of MultiChoice and Supersport were pathetic'

Eusebius McKaiser weighed in on the media conference held by SuperSport CEO, Gideon Khobane, and MultiChoice CEO, Calvo Mawela.

The men briefed the media about the incident where Ashwin Willemse highlighted feeling patronised by rugby analysts Nick Mallet and Naas Botha during last Saturday's Supersport Rugby broadcast resulting in him walking off the set.

I think that the CEO of MultiChoice as well as the CEO of Supersport were pathetic. They were utterly unconvincing. There was firstly an internal contradiction of what they had said and secondly there was also something unfortunate in terms of the impact of that internal contradiction.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host.

Firstly, the internal contradiction.. so on the one hand they keep saying to the reporters in response to every successive question, there is a process underway, there's nothing conclusive. And yet at the same time they say, we completely rule out here any racial undertones and any racism. You can't have it both ways.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host.

He added that sometimes black people are not necessarily the best allies of other black people.

So the fact that two black men can categorically say that there is no racial undertones is not the end of the matter. Sometimes black people get it wrong.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host.

Sometimes as a black CEO, when we have incredible proximity to white power, and to CEOs and owners of companies, we don't necessarily own our truth.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host.

Callers also weighed in on the media conference and Zayne a caller said Ashwin Willemse walking off on live television was a drastic thing to do.

I don't think it is necessarily something that happened on the Saturday, I think it might have been a build up of something over time and on Saturday, he decided that I have had enough.

Zayne, caller

Another caller Richard criticised 702 for discussing the incident on Monday in a very speculative way without knowing the facts.

Trying to find some way to justify what happened on Supersport. Ashwin Willemse is coloured and he played a very small role in France in 2007 at the World Cup. When a white man suddenly decides to disagree with him over a period of probably a year, he couldn't take it.

Richard, caller

Siboniso, totally disagreed with what Richard was saying:

What Richard should do, is he should keep quiet and stop exposing his ignorance and actually go and research. If one looks at Ashwin's background, he comes from a horrible background and for all intents and purposes, he was not meant to be where he is.

Siboniso

Here's what more callers had to say...
