Rugby journalist Vata Ngobeni has opened up about his experience of being second-guessed in the world of the game.

The Eastern Cape-born writer and analyst has written an opinion piece on the pain of being called a quota, in the aftermath of the Ashwin Willemse walk-out at SuperSport.

Ngobeni acknowledged the opportunities he's had in his career, and reflected on how he has constantly felt undermined in the rugby fraternity because of his race.

He spoke about how he resonates with Willemse's frustrations about only being seen for his race and not his achievements.

Ngobeni says it is important for black people to share their personal stories, in sports world, business and other fields.

I went to a prestigious boys school in the Eastern Cape and I was privileged enough to play the game of rugby from a very young age.

You get to the point whereby, when you do right, people always question your credibility. They question whether you know the game of rugby.

A lot of the time, it's not because of what I'm saying but because I'm speaking as a black man.

People say derogatory statements towards, not about the content of what I wrote, but more because of the colour of my skin.

Everytime I'd raise something, people would say 'Ah, the race card again'.

Ashwin Willemse said something that really touched me, the fact that people refer to him as a quota player.
