Possible tourism learnerships on the cards for youth in Bo Kaap

Residents of the Bo Kaap have met with public officials following recent protests in the area against gentrification and a lack of employment opportunities.

These youth are concerned about a few things, one being about employment, the lack of housing, the exorbitant rates and tariffs in the Bo Kaap, they're concerned about gentrification and about heritage.

Bo Kaap residents say while they welcome tourists to the area, they're currently not benefiting financially, and they want this to change.

The youth actually want learnerships in order to participate in the tourism economy of the Bo Kaap.

You have people who have no historical connections to the Bo Kaap and they are the tour guides! But the local youth want to be trained, and of course they have the knowledge of the heritage, they understand the history, but there is a formula to becoming a proper tour guide.

Tourism wasn't the only thing on the agenda at the meeting, other issues of concern were also addressed.

The other issue that was raised was housing. They're discussing the issues of private ownership versus social housing.
