Explaining the impact of lower mass engine internals on engine response

Motor features are constantly evolving over time.

In this week's motoring feature, Technical Editor at CAR Magazine Nicol Louw discussed the impact of lower mass engine internals on engine response, for example the Ferrari 488 Pista which has new titanium concord lowering rotational inertia of the engine.

This is said to be the most powerful V8 engine Ferrari has ever built.

WHta Ferrari has done with the special Pista, is lightened the connecting rods - the conrods, which is connecting the crankshaft with the pistons, changing it to a very special titanium alloy material, on the connecting rods they can save 1.7 kilograms and the advantage of that is your crankshaft can also be lightened...

Nicol Louw, Technical Editor at CAR Magazine

The end result, in a race engine like this, it spins up to 8 000 RPM.

Nicol Louw, Technical Editor at CAR Magazine

Just the hardware itself, the lighter the components that have to spin up, the quicker you will get and that is very important for a racing engine.
