Murder accused felt 'embarrassed' fighting with wife in front of colleagues

Murder accused Jason Rohde has told the Western Cape High Court how he felt 'embarrassed' fighting with his late wife in front of his co-workers.

The businessman is accused of strangling his wife Susan in a hotel room at the Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch in July 2016.

EWN reporter Shamiela Fisher is following the court proceedings and gave an account of Rohde's testimony.

In February 2016 his wife came across a Valentine's card from his mistress in his luggage after he had returned from Cape Town. His wife confronted him and initially, he denied this and eventually he had to come clean.

He says he was in the bathroom sending his mistress a message and his wife walked in as he tried to delete the message and saw him doing this, then she realised he was still having an affair and it resulted in further conflicts and verbal fights.

Fisher says Rohde told the court that at that point he wanted to leave the room but the wife prevented him.

As he was trying to get away from her the soft part of his forearm, as he swung to get away from her, collided with her face. And while she was grabbing him from behind, he tried to use his elbow to hit her away from him and his elbow collided with her nose.

Eventually, he moved out of the room and Susan followed him to his colleague's room where his mistress was as well. Susan was standing outside banging on the door demanding that he gets out immediately.

Rodhe says when he left they continued fighting and this was in front of his co-workers and he was quite ashamed and embarrassed that his co-workers had to see this.
