Randfontein protesters level corruption allegations against mayor

Mohlakeng residents in Randfontein closed several roads on Wednesday morning after pamphlets circulated in the area called for a shutdown. Residents expressed their prolonged unhappiness with the municipality.

The representative from Randfontein Tsoga Group George Molele says people at Mohlakeng Hostel do not pay for services.

I can take you to the hostel now, the water is leaking right from the tap 24/7.

The mayor of Rand West installed electricity at Mohlakeng hostel and it's only a little percentage of people who are buying electricity and the rest have robbed the meter boxes in their rooms.

Another burning issue is that 81 people were hired because some people calling themselves the 'Colombians' went to the mayor and threatened him saying you are going to hire our people permanently and that's what he did.

In Mohlakeng he never even hired one person for the municipality.

Executive Mayor of Rand West City Local Municipality Mzi Khumalo says they have received the memorandum from the community members and have responded accordingly.

We are working with the hostel committee. Over a period of time, the hostel community was not charged any services after the collapse of the hostel services in our township.

Mzi Khumalo, Executive Mayor of Rand West City Local Municipality

The electricity matter is sorted and we have evidence. People of the hostel are paying for electricity.
