'There is no evidence that cash heist criminals have received military training'

Unions representing cash-in-transit drivers and personnel have called for employers to design military-grade vans in place of money transport vehicles, to withstand heavy weapons fire and explosives.

Members of the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) plan to protest over what they say is a lack of political will from government to act on the increased cash-in-transit heists.

Annelise Burgees, author of the book Heist, says there are incredibly experienced people, heading up syndicates who are executing these crimes.

She goes on to talk about the military precision used to carry out a heist.

These are the absolute top of the food chain, people who become cash-in-transit criminals are people who have earned their stripes up the ladder of criminality. There are suggestions that we are only dealing with about 200 of these master brains. 200 people coordinating the whole of gangs.

Annelise Burgees, author of The Heist

The hallmark of cash-in-transit attacks has always been the military precision, it is done with so much background information and intelligence.

There is no evidence that they [heist criminals] have received military training. In terms of the political party angle, there is also no evidence of this. The answer is very pedestrian, this is run by criminals who want to access cash.
