The haunting photos of Juan Stockenstroom‘s latest series Otherness, reimagines people – but with a slightly different twist.

Stockenstroom uses digital photo manipulation, editing the images so that they present a replacement look of what being human could be. His work is striking and not to mention disturbing due to the hyper-real effect of photo editing. Coupled with the greyscale presentation means that the features presented in the photographs are almost easily absorbed.

He says he was inspired to produce otherness after reading about a mythological Chinese figure called Cangjie who, as the legend goes, created the Chinese logogram figures. According to legend, he had four eyes with four pupils. Stockenstroom was intrigued by the idea of how society would react to someone with multiplied facial features, and began to mould alternate beings to this effect.

“Envisioning different people in one body, different voices of the other-selves, Otherness reflects on the various ways technology allows us to present and project multiple identities on multiple social platforms,” says Stockenstroom.

Otherness delves into the way technology allows us to be in several dimensions with others, also preferring to produce alternative versions of themselves.

“My work exaggerates the merging of fact and fiction and underlines the altered social face we have become accustomed to presenting in this highly digitised era,” says Stockenstroom about his work that took over a two-year period to complete.
