Taxi bosses threaten disruptions in Cape Town's major hubs

Cape Town taxi bosses have threatened to disrupt services from Wednesday because of an outstanding dispute with the City of Cape Town.

Talks with city officials over the renewal of a joint venture contract involving Golden Arrow Bus Services and taxi associations have deadlocked.

MEC Donald Grant has been engaging stakeholders in the taxi industry through closed hearings with different organisations.

He says two of the partners in the joint venture, have uplifted their licences.

Taxi association Codeta seems to be unhappy with its profit returns on particular routes, says Grants.

He urges the associations to make appeal and follow the necessary legal procedure and not intimidate other members.

My appeal to everyone is that if you are unhappy about the commercial agreement that you are in, you cannot take away the rights of others to choose alternatives.

Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works in WC

Grant says commuters who are threatened by taxi operators should report it to police.

He is scheduled to meet other City officials on Monday to get further updates on how to resolve the current problems.
