'We need contextual solutions for our real problems'

Despite the number of innovation hubs popping up in South Africa's city centres, entrepreneurs have been set up to fail, according to Business Enterprize Development Manager at Tshimologong, Shaun Randles.

Randles and founder of Jozi Angels, Abu Cassiem joined Azania to talk about the role of innovation hubs, what needs to change in the entrepreneurial landscape and how entrepreneurs should better themselves.

Speaking of building a culture of entrepreneurship, Randal says if you are looking to turn an idea into a business, you may want to change your approach.

I think poor entrepreneurs have been set up to fail in the past because they haven't been given clear guidelines on what they are looking at fixing or solving.

Shaun Randles, Business Enterprize Development Manager at Tshimologong

That needs to be the culture mindset change that needs to happen in South Africa - stop trying to build an Uber, ora lift or copycat of an American product and let's start building contextual solutions for our real problems.

Cassiem says there can be frustrations across the board.

Entrepreneurs not being able to get the funding they need to start a business and then the angels looking at entrepreneurs and saying you need to be a bit further along before we invest in you. Money at the moment is an investors market...

Abu Cassiem, Founder of Jozi Angels

He says entrepreneurs should develop their business and solutions over time.

Start at point A, where you are now. Go and do whatever it is you are doing on a much lower scale, develop your business and your solution overtime. Work your way to that vision, sometimes you find they can bootstrap for quite some time before they need external funding...
