It has been almost five years since journalist Ruth Hopkins uncovered the results of an investigation into Mangaung Correctional Centre.
The investigation revealed that forty-two inmates had allegedly been tortured in G4S staff at the facility.
Hopkins says then Minister of Correctional Services Sbu Ndebele had promised an investigation into the privatisation of prisons.
In 2013 I uncovered a year-long investigation into Mangaung Correctional Centre and I found evidence of abuse of electroshocking, forced medication with antipsychotic drugs, lengthy segregation of inmates and also some suspicious deaths.— Ruth Hopkins, Senior Journalist at the Wits Justice Project
Hopkins says no report has yet been published and that Correctional Services Michael Masutha recently visited the prison and said it was 'state of the art'.
