Parliamentary committee angered as Public Protector fails to appear

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane failed to appear before the Parliament’s justice committee, citing a family emergency which she couldn't re-arrange.

The meeting was scheduled to receive a briefing from the Public Protector's office, and to also discuss a request by the DA to institute an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.

DA's Glynnis Breytenbach was angered by Mkhwebane's absence and scrutinised her letter of apology.

Read: "The time is over for giving Mkhwebane the benefit of the doubt"

I have serious doubt about the veracity of this very flimsy excuse and I take the greatest possible umbrage to the fact that the Public Protector has shown such contempt for this committee that she produces this kind of one-page flimsy letter to say that she couldn't re-arrange her family emergency...

Glynnis Breytenbach, DA MP

This is so nonsensical that she provoked outrage in every single member of this committee.

Executive Director at Corruption Watch David Lewis says it is becoming a pattern that important figures produce juvenile doctor's notes and letter that cant be proven just to avoid accountability.

Parliament should do what it has to do, subpoena her, hold her and other ministers in contempt if they continue to behave in this way.

It reminds me of junior school when you don't want to go for rugby practice or swimming gala - it is really undignified.
