WC Health Department considers replacing 'dilapidated' Tygerberg Hospital

The Western Cape Health Department says it's considering plans to replace Tygerberg Hospital in 2023.

On Wednesday, Parliaments' Portfolio Committee was briefed on the state of hospitals in the Western Cape.

The committee was told that Tygerberg, the second largest hospital in South Africa, is dilapidated.

Head of the Western Cape Health Department, Dr Beth Engelbrecht explained that the hospital is in such a bad state that they have spent R700 million on maintenance alone, over the past few years.

She says the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has recommended that the hospital be replaced.

Dr Beth Engelbrecht, Head of Department at Western Cape Dept of Health

At the moment we will keep it at the best possible state because we have the most amazing staff working there and we would to keep an environment where they keep on enjoying their work...
