How Nando’s became a global empire (with 1200 restaurants in 23 countries)

Resilience, grit and determination are key. Do what you think is right… It took us 15 years to become an overnight success.

Robbie Brozin, Nando's

Professional Banking”, Nedbank’s private banking offer, recently gave 30 of its young professional clients the opportunity to hear legendary Nando’s founder Robbie Brozin talk about how he turned the much-loved South African chicken brand into a global empire with 1200 restaurants in 23 countries.

Brozin discussed the pitfalls of running a business and why the one word that sums up what was needed by entrepreneurs is “resilience”.

He also spoke about letting go of control of Nando’s, taking two years to find himself, and how he returned to work on projects making a difference in society (e.g. how the “Goodbye Malaria” campaign in Mozambique created jobs and saved lives).

Brozin recounted how ignorant he was about business when he founded Nando’s.

Many times I wanted to give up, couldn’t pay salaries, banks wanted to shut us down but my Dad and brother said stick with it… they took me outa the gutter.

Brozin’s tips:

  • Resilience, grit and determination are key.

  • Surround yourself with good people.

  • Don’t copy others. Do what you think is right.

  • Develop a culture based on a real vision that people can embrace. Nando’s vision is based on “Pride, Passion, Courage & Integrity”.

  • Patience – it takes at least 10 years to create a sustainable business.

  • Money finds money – find out what are the core financial drivers in your business.

  • Believe in your people – Nando’s is succeeding because of its people.

We believe that initiatives such as these demonstrate our commitment to helping young professionals rub shoulders with successful entrepreneurs who can inspire them to achieve their own goals.
