Should South Africa follow France’s lead and ban shops from throwing food away?

It’s World Hunger Day and, according to the World Economic Forum, there are 842 million people around the world who suffer chronic hunger.

The French parliament recently unanimously passed a bill that makes it illegal for grocery stores in France to throw away or destroy unsold food.

We interviewed Woolworths Head of Sustainability Justin Smith about what the policy is when it comes to food South African grocers fail to sell.

Listen to the audio (scroll down) for detail.

Our staff has the opportunity to buy discounted food that is past its sell by date. We then donate what’s left but still edible. This is quite standard in South Africa; the situation is a bit different than in France.

Justin Smith, Woolworths Head of Sustainability

Food wasteage is a huge issue all around the world. But we’re not picking up a lot of it at Woolworths. Every year we’re giving away about R420 million of food at cost.
