[LISTEN] Workers face eviction in Drakenstein area

20 000 people are facing eviction from land they’ve been living and working on for many years. National Government has been to the Drakenstein area to meet with land owners, workers and their representatives.

The Co-Director of Women on Farms Project Carmen Louw joined Africa Melane on the #WeekendBreakfast to chat about the test cases, and what this means for the workers.

We haven’t decided on a test case but there’re a number of farms where all the workers received eviction notice letters says Louw.

She adds that they will discuss the issue in detail with the Rural organisations, Government Department, and the Minister.

New owners are taking over the farms. The farms are not given to Government for redistribution, it’s sold from one farmer to the next at exuberant prices.

The reason why workers are being evicted is because he (the owner) no longer wants to employ them, and he uses the area as a luxury function venue.

The legislation makes provision for expropriation in public interest, and there’s no fee attached to it.
