Research refutes ACDP MP claim that 200 000 abortions take place in SA each year

ACDP's Member of Parliament Cheryllyn Dudley stated her case for changes to be made to South Africa's abortion laws, earlier this year.

She told Parliament’s portfolio committee on health "With 200,000 abortions a year in South Africa – and many of these are repeat abortions; not a second, but a third, sometimes even a fourth – more information could help women make better choices re contraception and safer sex,”.

Africa Check's Kate Wilkinson joined Azania Mosaka to find out the truth behind the statistic.

She[Dudley] said that although it was a slight generalisation, she said that it was supported by data from the department of health. The figures that we got from her only covered the months April to June 2017 and when we looked at those, we saw just under 15 000 abortions were recorded in South Africa over those three months.

We asked the department of health for a breakdown. For the first year 2014/15, there were around 88 800 abortions recorded, 2015/16 we saw around 83 700 and in the most recent financial year 2016/17 we see the number has increased to just over 105 000 over 12 months.
