The Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI), working in partnership with a broader civil society has announced that it will be hosting a major conference on reconstructing public institutions in South Africa in the aftermath of state capture.
Executive Director at PARI, Prof Ivor Chipkin joined Karima on her show to discuss this and how South Africa can go about developing an agenda for state reform.
Chipkin says state capture revealed weaknesses in the design and organization of many government institutions.
The state capture revealed huge vulnerabilities in the way government works, that in fact state capture was possible precisely because a whole range of systems and processes were not simply being violated but they facilitated this kind of capture.— Prof Ivor Chipkin, Executive Director at PARI
We are trying to have a conversation about what will it take to build a state that is not susceptible to this kind of capture.— Prof Ivor Chipkin, Executive Director at PARI
