Herman Mashaba explains why he suspended MMC over pro-Israel comments

Health and Social Development MMC Mpho Phalatse was suspended by Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba for making comments at the South African Friend of Israel national conference at the weekend.

Phalatse said: "I am a friend of Israel and the City of Johannesburg is a friend of Israel."

Mashaba wasted no time in suspending her saying he is disappointed that the Councillor attributed her personal remarks to the city.

Mashaba says Phalatse is a good public servant but it is important to be sensitive to world affairs.

He says she had no right to bring in the City of Johannesburg in her comments because the city employs Jews, Muslims, Hindus and more and needed to be sensitive on behalf of all.
