Suspected Islamists attack in Northern Mozambique after 10 people beheaded

A number of investors are threatening to pull out of the Mozambican major gas fields after suspected Islamist militants beheaded 10 people and killed seven others since May this year.

Director at Signal Risk Management Ryan Cummings says there seems to be some kind of insurgency in northeastern Mozambique.

He believes the motivation is both religious and monetary.

There is also a lot of suggestion that indicates that the individuals involved in some of the acts of violence in northern Mozambique are tied to some regional organised criminal activities such as the involvement in the smuggling of precious gems mined in the area.

Cummings says although the violence is threatening business and investors, there hasnt been any attack on any of the businesses operating in the area.

He says the attacks have been crude in that they are attacking civilians using machetes, but there is still lack of sophistication which suggests that the group has the capacity to launch a mass casualty attack specifically targeting all oil and gas interests.
