Hate plastic? Grocer Nude Foods doesn’t have any of it! It’s also cheaper…

It’s very much an old-school type store with a modern twist… It looks and smells like the type of store our grandparents would’ve shopped at… The lighting is softer, the music is more tranquil… It’s a much more tactile experience… You can carefully consider how much of the product you want to buy…

Paul Rubin, Nude Foods

Woolworths recently promised to stop using non-recyclable plastic packaging for its own products as well as plastic shopping bags, straws and earbuds by 2022.

By 2022?!

Not good.

Which brings us to Paul Rubin’s Nude Foods, Cape Town’s first plastic free grocery store.

The concept is not new, or a hipster fad.

Our great-grandparents shopped happily before goods packaged in plastic existed.

Nude Foods stores and packages everything in reusable containers such as cotton bags and glass jars.

Shoppers bring their own containers, bags or whatever they want to pack their groceries in.

Nothing goes to a landfill.

Rubin says his prices are lower than the packaged equivalents at major supermarkets.

Shoppers can choose the exact weight of the items they want, potentially a major cost saver.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Rubin for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

It’s a completely plastic free bulk goods store…

Paul Rubin, Nude Foods

We’re not a vegan store… our foods are completely non-GMO…

Paul Rubin, Nude Foods

We definitely want to increase our accessibility… We’ve been flooded with requests for franchise opportunities…

Paul Rubin, Nude Foods

We’re self-funded… If we were to take an investor on-board, it’ll have to be someone who shares the culture…
