Ever wondered why you go for that slice of cake...even when you're full?

So you go out for dinner, you eat a full meal, you are full, but the dessert menu comes and you cant stop yourself, you order a slice of cake...

Don't feel guilty, it's not you, it's your brain...

It seems scientists have discovered the part of the brain that still finds room for sweet treats and high calorific foods even when we are full.

The Naked Scientist, Dr Chris Smith says we all have had that experience, where you think you are full up and then someone wheels out the sweet trolley.

And all of a sudden you find a corner of your stomach, that just about has a chocolate size space left in it and you eat it.

Dr Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist

He adds that the world is getting fatter, obesity is at epidemic proportions all over the world.

In some countries maybe half of the population is overweight and a third of the population obese and this carries enormous consequences because obesity is the number one risk factor for diabetes

Dr Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist

He adds that according to what Saleem Nicola has found, we are victims of our ancestry.

Because he has been looking at a region of the brain which is called the nucleus accumbens which is part of the brain's pleasure centre. And there is a population of nerve cells, they have discovered there, which when you are full, but not when you are hungry when you are full.

Dr Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist

This population of nerve cells using the same receptors as morphine bines to, activate and they tell you to feel hungry but only for highly appetising, energy-rich foods.

Dr Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist

So in other words when you are just normally hungry, you don't feel a particular preponderance to eat any selective foods stuff, you will just eat because you are hungry.

Dr Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist

But once you are full, your appetite normally switches off but the fullness then turns on this additional group of cells that then make you want to have food which is sweet and calorie rich.

Dr Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist

He adds that the reasons for this are because historically when we didn't have supermarkets on every corner, we didn't know where our next meals were coming from. So we made the most of every opportunity to eat as much as we could.

The Naked Scientist also answered different questions from callers including what happens when people die, will we live until we are 200 years old?
