Graphic designer chats about his plans for new Mandela centenary coins design

Zimbabwean-born and Joburg based artist Sindiso Nyoni is a globally recognised figure who has showcased his art all over the world.

The illustrator and graphic designer has been commissioned by SA Mint and the Reserve Bank to design the new Mandela centenary coins.

In the past, the seasoned portrait artist has collaborated with SARB and SA Mint to design the OR Tambo centenary coins as well.

Nyoni says that he has a background in graphic design and 6 years ago, he decided to take the big jump to go solo.

During that time, I did a lot of freelance work and in 2015, I had the opportunity to work with SA Mint says Nyoni. He adds that he was commissioned to create portraits for OR Tambo.

I had to be very mindful of my depictions.

My background is in portrait art so approaching something like an iconic face requires a sense of mindfulness he says.

It is quite a challenge because you still want that image to be recognisable.
