The annual ICON Comics and Games Convention is set to take place at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg this weekend.
The conference will host a series of tabletop and board gaming warfare, national tournaments, competitions as well as 40 panel and workshop presentations focusing on various topics such as the state of esports in South Africa, how to design monsters and aliens for games and how to get started on your own YouTube channel.
Looking at the topic of comic book writing and illustration, Azania Mosaka sat down with illustrator Sean Izaakse who is currently the artist on the ‘Avengers’ and 'Champions' comic books, as well as Jim Zub - a Marvel Comics author and currently the lead writer on the 'Avengers’ and ‘Champions’ series of comic books.
They shared insights into the process of telling stories through pictures and words and why successfully selling a comic book takes a lot of patience and dedication.
A lot of guys think it is this thing that happens overnight but it only really happened to me when I was 38 years old. It took a few years of dedication and practice, just leveling up as an artist before they were like ok you look like we can give you chance.— Sean Izaakse, illustrator
A lot of the time it is a job and you work at it and get better at it through practice. The same thing holds through with music, art...so you have been working a way sort of toiling in obscurity and when that opportunity happens you have the skills to take advantage of it.— Jim Zub, comic book writer
