Public hearings on land expropriation set to continue in Limpopo

Public hearings on whether or not land should be expropriated without compensation will continue in Limpopo on Thursday.

Parliament's Joint Constitutional Review Committee will travel to various parts of the country to engage communities and determine whether or not Section 25 of the Constitution should be amended.

Tempers flared between Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota during the first public hearing held in the province on Wednesday.

Trying to clarify the incident Co-Chairperson of the joint Constitutional Review Committee Vincent Smith had this to say:

My approach to chairing the meeting is that everybody must have a role to play and what I said to everybody is that they should be able to assist, so it happened that Julius Malema and Mothapo and others would say to me chair somebody's hand is up there... I think Mr Lekota then felt that it was a manipulation because I was being told who to allow to speak and that was not the case.

Vincent Smith, Co-Chairperson of Constitutional Review Committee

I think between him and Mr Malmea, Malema said to him if you feel it is unfair, the chair has afforded all of us an opportunity to chair, why don't you chair and make sure you correct it. I really think it was a big hullabaloo about nothing because immediately after it was done it was all sorted.

Vincent Smith, Co-Chairperson of Constitutional Review Committee

It is the nature of these interactions because people have such strong views.
