Parly's committee on land expropriation hard at work to canvas all views

They've been concerns of party influence in the hearings that are currently underway on a possible review of Section 25 of the Constitution with regards to land expropriation without compensation.

Parliamentary Committee Chairperson, Vincent Smith says they don't have a problem with political parties mobilising their members to be part of the hearing and present their views.

What we are careful about is that those members who are serving on the committee do not actively participate but sit and listen.

Vincent Smith, Co-chairperson of Constitutional review committee

I suspect people are saying parties got too involved because they bussed in their supporters, I don't have a problem with that. We must not isolate the written submissions from the public hearings process.

Smith says they have procured services of a service provider who is currently in Cape Town going through all the written submissions while they are on the road.

He says when they are done with the public hearings the service provider will give them a report of the contents of all submissions which will be assessed by the committee as well as the political parties.

While they are in excess of 700 000, you might find that many of them are cut and paste of the same response because they were templates made for the various parties.

Vincent says the next sessions of the public hearings will be moving from Mpumalanga to North West and others will be moving from Free State to KwaZulu Natal.
