Added tax is making petrol more expensive in SA, as price set to hike again

Motorists will have to dig deeper into their pockets from Wednesday as the petrol prices increase.

The Department of Energy announced a 23 cent increase for 93 octane while 95 octane will cost 26 cent more per litre.

Diesel has also increased by between 24 and 26 cents per litre while illuminating paraffin increases by between 22 and 30 cents per litre.

The primary reason why fuel in neighbouring countries is cheaper is that they do not have the amount of indirect taxes on their fuel that South Africa has.

In 2017 it gathered around R70 billion for the fiscal and that is a lot of money and it's an easy tax to collect; everybody puts fuel in the vehicles and everybody is taxed.
