Verulam man accused of repeatedly raping step daughter

A man accused of locking up and raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter over a five-year period has appeared in the Verulam Family Court.

The 43-year-old appeared for a bail hearing on charges of sexual grooming , rape, sexual assault ,exposing a child to pornographic material and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was arrested last month when the child escaped from the family home.

She is said to have confided to a neighbour about the abuse, which started shortly after her mother’s death.

Eyewitness News reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo was in court.

The state called upon investigating officer Nevarge Lutchminarain, who was basically giving details about this investigation so far. According to the victim,who was interviewed for four hours, she was being raped approximately every second day.

One of the harrowing reports that were given was the accused is said to have threatened his victim, to say if she does report the alleged sexual assault and rape, that he would put her in the same place that he put her mother.
