While honesty about sexual fantasies can create greater intimacy, clinical sexologist Dr Eve says disclosing may have its downsides.

Dr Eve explains that men and women's fantasies are reflecting a move towards "open relationships" and away from mono-heteronormative experiences.

US researcher Dr. Justin Lehmiller conducted a comprehensive study in America on sexual fantasies.

The findings have been published in his book, Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life .

The top fantasies revealed by the study are:

  • group sex
  • control/rough sex
  • novelty, adventure and variety
  • taboo and forbidden sex
  • non-monogamy
  • passion and romance
  • erotic flexibility

Dr Eve explains that there is often shame and guilt around sexual fetishes.
