READ: Petrol hikes: 'There's very little that government can do'

Outa CEO Wayne Duvenage says his organisation has been calling for a freeze on the fuel levy for years.

What they did a few years ago was when the fuel price dropped quite drastically, they took the opportunity to push the fuel levy as high as they could. It took some significant increases over the years and now it has come back to haunt them.

Now for the ANC to call for the fuel levy to be reduced, when they themselves - the ANC led government - was pushing the envelope on the fuel levy, it has become a problem.

Wayne Duvenage, Outa CEO

Yes, while we welcome their call to have the fuel levy frozen, we would like to say that we have been calling for this to happen for the last number of years now, going back to 2010.
