Making rugby history:

How does a legendary playwright, actor and director feature on a Sports profile feature? The answer is simple: Dr. John Kani is a formidable part of the history of rugby and cricket in South Africa.

His love for cricket is evident in his voice. “People used to call me a net – nothing went through [me].” Referring to his wicket-keeping skills.

Udo Carelse doesn’t have to dig too deep to find out that John Kani’s first love is cricket and that, he not only played first team rugby in high school but also played an integral part in rugby administration in the 70s.

We were told by [Danie] Craven – over his dead body would a black man wear a Springbok jersey. I’m glad black people wore that jersey before he died.

John Kani

About rugby and racial integration:

In light of development in Rugby, Kani believes that development of youth sportsmen should begin at a high school and tertiary level (as opposed to the current primary school level). He says that in high school and tertiary level, the players are ripe for the picking and should they not be picked up then, they are most likely to join the working force as soon as they leave school.

He is optimistic about the racial integration in this country (especially where sport is concerned).

South Africa is way ahead of any other country I’ve visited in terms of integration and non-racialism.
