22-year-old mother gave birth to quadruplets at Tygerberg Hospital

A team of doctors at Tygerberg Hospital delivered quadruplets on Friday to a 22-year-old mom.

Prof Stefan Gebhardt, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Tygerberg Hospital, says they had to perform a cesarean section at 29 weeks because the mother had complications.

He says the procedure took about an hour but in preparation they had to have four sets of everything (beds, incubators and pediatricians) in order to deliver the babies.

The babies weighed 1kg each, two boy and two girls.

They are all doing well and quite strong but it's going to be quite a long stay in hospital until they are big enough to be discharged.
