Do's and Don'ts of using the Nelson Mandela name - Sello Hatang

The name Nelson Mandela is known the world over and used by many organisations that are trying to keep the legacy of Madiba alive.

But not everyone is using the name appropriately and some might not have been given the approval that's needed to continue using the name.

CEO of the Nelson Mandwela Foundation, Sello Hatang, says Mandela's name should not be used "willy nilly", as anyone pleases.

The Mandela name has been one of those that every now and then is grossly abused and we try to discourage people from doing so.

Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation

We say to people, all of us appreciate Madiba but we always have to observe that he has a family and constitutions that he has bestowed the responsibility for looking after the name.

Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation

Hatang says Madiba gave the name to about 59 organisation that are currently using it for a good cause.

There are those institutions that Madiba himself felt it was necessary for him to lend them his name but all of us must at least observe that it's doing good and not being grossly abused.

Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation

Hatang says if anyone feels the need to make a use of the name for a good cause should follow the right channels.

They should write to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and they will respond accordingly.
