I afford myself a lot of grace, go on set, and work hard - Lerato Makhetha

Actor Lerato Makhetha admits not all Isidingo viewers have been receptive since he took over from Loyiso McDonald in his role as Ntando Sibeko on the SABC 3 soapie Isidingo.

The criticism has not stopped him from executing his job and doing it well.

The son of veteran actor Jerry Mofokeng is not new to the industry, having appeared in eKasi stories and on Generations.

He sat down with Azania to talk about his first big break with Isidingo and his love for music.

People are upset and they have every right to be. I empathise with it. There is nobody that can play Loyiso Mcdonald better than Loyiso McDonald. Nobody can play this role the way that I can. I went in not trying to emulate what Loyiso did. I don't mind that change is uncomfortable for you, let's not be hateful.

Lerato Makhetha, actor and musician

I afford myself a lot of grace. At the end of the day it's about the character. I am here to do a job, I go on set, I have done my homework. I work hard and those are the things that will sustain me in this industry.

Lerato Makhetha, actor and musician

Speaking on his father's teachings and sharing a stage with him, Makhetha says he has learnt a lot.

I didn't go to school to study drama, the reason I was able to end up on stage in the first place was because I was sitting in the pews watching him direct.

Lerato Makhetha, actor and musician

We had the opportunity to work together once. I came in as a musician. We were working on the Brenda Fassie musical. The lead actors didn't show up for a performance, he kind of sheepishly came to me and said are you willing to play this role and I will play this role....

Lerato Makhetha, actor and musician

We go to take a bow, we get a standing ovation and that has to be the greatest moment of my life. We have not done it again since but I look forward to the day that we do. Everyone that has been supportive I am very appreciative of.
