Mashaba writes to ministers about illegal migrant hiring in Jozi

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says he has written to Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant and Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba to address the number of businesses in the city, that are believed to be hiring undocumented immigrants.

Mashaba says the matter was brought to his attention during a visit to the Slovo Park community earlier this week.

Residents have apparently complained of how a neighbouring factories employ undocumented immigrants in contravention of the law.

These people are undocumented, they are being exploited by these scrupulous business people because obviously through the constitution, whatever happens to them, they have no protection whatsoever.

Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg mayor

At the same time, us as local law abiding citizens of the city of Johannesburg, we are losing opportunities.

Mashaba says government is responsible for enforcing the law and should ensure that these businesses are held to account.

The fault is not with our foreign nationals, it is with the Department of Home Affairs that has opened up our borders to everyone coming into this country.

Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg mayor

Secondly the Departement of Labour, they are the ones that are responsible for visiting factories and businesses to make sure people are employed correctly. It is a crisis that is creating animosity between our foreign nationals and our locals.
