#SADGT: CEO shares experience of being a BEE front at her first job

In this segment of South Africans Doing Great Things, CEO and founder of Motseng Investment Holdings Ipeleng Mkhari chats about her business, and her BEE experience.

Ipeleng Mkhari is currently in the business of property, but she started in surveillance.

She says that an entrepreneurs journey is never completely planned.

I started working in the family business which was in CCTV says Mkhari.

In 1996, I finished my degree and a friend of mine contacted me and told me that a company was looking for a black woman because of BEE regulations.

Fresh out of University, the content around Black Economic Empowerment was there, but I had never been in a business or corporate environment to actually know what that meaning was.

Mkhari says that being in the sector of electronic security wasn’t planned but it gave her the opportunity to become an entrepreneur, and understand what it means to be in that environment.

BEE in the early days was something that we all didn’t really understand, and there were no codes of good governance.

Mkhari says that when she started her business in 1998, everyone was doing what they believed was the right thing to do.

That meant that you needed to find someone who was black that you knew to partner with in the industry she adds.

Mkhari says that she was shocked to realise that 6 months in, she was a front because she had never meet the people she was co-directing with.

When I did meet them, I realised that it was the housekeeper and the gardener of my employer she says.
