Karyn Maughan says Ramaphosa has defended his decision to move former spy boss Arthur Fraser to Correctional Services.

The Business Day is reporting that President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended his decision to move former spy boss Arthur Fraser to Correctional Services on the basis of preventing a potential constitutional crisis.

Senior Specialist Reporter at Tiso Blackstar, Karyn Maughan, who wrote the article says the president is saying that he was forced to move Fraser because that crisis was caused after the Inspector-General of Intelligence, Setlhomamaru Dintwe, took Fraser, then director-general of the State Security Agency (SSA) to court for revoking his security clearance.

What is fascinating is that in this six-page submission by Ramaphosa's lawyers to the Gauteng High Court, he has really sought to underplay any suggestion that he regarded, for instance, the IGI's investigation particularly serious.

He says according to his lawyers that these are matters that have already been investigated and finalised by the IGI.

And he has also said that in removing Fraser from the position, he has given the SSA the opportunity to investigate Fraser's allegations against Dintwe himself.

She adds that the important thing to remember is that the Democratic Alliance (DA) is challenging the rationality of the president's decision to transfer Fraser.
