Over 250 corruption cases uncovered at the Department of Public Works

Public Works Director-General, Imtiaz Fazel says an independent anti-corruption unit has conducted 255 investigations into corruption at the department leading to 190 disciplinary hearings including suspensions, written warnings and dismissals.

The department is now working with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to recover close to R1.2 billion in over-billing by service providers and pursue criminal charges.

Fazel says a number of criminal charges have been laid.

We recently had a huge success with the lease investigation we conducted. That is the leases procured by the department with the private sector and in this regard we have R300 million we have identified by way of over payments to landlords charging for space not rented to us and charging rates per square meter in excess of what we have signed up for.

Imtiaz Fazel, Public Works Director-General

There is a lot that is being achieved and the next phase is to work on prevention and make sure that we do not have a recurrence of the experience, that we put the proper checks and balances in place.

Imtiaz Fazel, Public Works Director-General

The department has laid criminal charges with the Hawks and the police services and the SIU itself has taken 83 criminal referrals to the SAPS.
