Naked Scientist: How much water is too much for your body a day?

Naked Scientist Chris Smith says you can lose half a liter of water just from breathing and up to 5 liters an hour just from sweating.

What does this mean for your body?

Smith explains why you need to look at replacing the fluids you are losing and how too much water could pose a few health risks.

The body, as soon as it becomes dehydrated, will start scavenging back water from all the sources it possibly can so to be healthy you need one or two liters of water a day. Less than than 2 liters you can cope with, more than that, your body will just get rid of it.

Chris Smith, Naked Scientist

If you overdo it and outpace the ability of the kidneys to throw water away then you are in trouble as well because if you put too much water in the body, you dilute your blood down. Too much water leaches out into your tissues and this can make your brain swell.
