Earlier on this week, the Senior Executive team from the University of the Witwatersrand announced its decision to address the designation of students on its systems.
The University is making systems more accessible, and inclusive particularly for students who are part of the LGBTIAQ+ community.
Programme Coordinator for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Advocacy at the Wits Transformation and Employment Equity Office, Tish Lumos, chats to #NightTalk host Gugu Mhlungu about decolonising the University, and the problematic nature of ID books.
Lumos says that the whole idea is to support how we decolonise our University space.
Lumos adds that one of the first components in transformation is research.
The mass implication of assuming affects people who are transgender says the programme coordinator.
Let me use an example. A transgender man applies to study at our University, and studies with us over a period of a few years. We know, from his legal documentation that the markers on his ID book says that he is female thus in our University system, we would refer to all his particular timetables, and letters from the University etc. as Dear Miss, or Dear Mrs. Which is really degrading for somebody who is not.— Tish Lumo, Programme Coordinator for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Advocacy at the Wits Transformation and Employment Equity Office
Lumos says that the University has done away with those kind of assumptions.
Transgender people, myself included, have to fight to change our legal documentation which could take 4 years says the programme coordinator.
