Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker says 6 trains were destroyed in the fire that broke out at Cape Town Station.
Walker says this torching of carriages has been going on since October 2015 with over 100 coaches lost in this period.
A fire broke out over the weekend that has seen the loss of a further 7 coaches.
The estimated cost for Saturday is around R30 million.— Richard Walker, Metrorail regional manager
Thought insured, this damage increases Metrorail's risk profile, he says, and replacing the coaches takes time. It has a knock-on effect on commuters causing delays and overcrowding.
