Zimbabwe elections: 'They called him their new president, the mood is electric'

Zimbabweans are going to the polls in the country's first election without the involvement of long-time leader Robert Mugabe.

5 million Zimbabwe have registered to vote at 10 thousand polling stations across the nation.

EWN reporter Clement Manyathela who is in Zimbabwe says most Zimbabweans were very excited and enthusiastic when going to the polls on Monday morning.

I was at a particular polling station just outside Harare where MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa also cast his ballot. When he arrived there as well, the environment was electric, people were shouting his name and they were excited to see him and people were calling him the Messiah.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

They called him their new president, so the mood is quite electric on the ground. But obviously, the question is on how the electoral outcome will be received by the two front-runners.
