SANDF General Solly Shoke told the media that there is no truth in these claims and that the Defence Force is 'above politics'.

South African Defence Force General Solly Shoke rubbished claims reported in the media that arms were being smuggled to Cuba on a South African Airways (SAA) chartered flight.

Among the claims was that defence headquarters narrowly averted a coup when former President Jacob Zuma was asked to step down.

Shoke addressed the media on Tuesday saying that 'there is no whiff of truth' in what was reported in the media.

We have to indicate to the people of South Africa the SANDF is above party politics and we respect the Constitution of the country and the elected authority as well. We will never ever get involved with the politics of the country...

Solly Shoke, SANDF general

There was no weapon that was going to be smuggled and we would like to say that the reporting was far-fetched and then we must not frustrate ourselves with that report because it is not true. It is just a figment of the imagination.

Solly Shoke, SANDF general
