EWN reporter Barry Bateman says Ramaphosa has dropped Zuma’s legal battle to protect controversial prosecution heavyweights.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has told controversial prosecutions heavyweights Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi he intends to launch inquiries into their fitness to hold office.

READ: Bar Council says Jiba not fit and proper to be an advocate

Ramaphosa has also indicated that he is awaiting the outcome of a Constitutional Court ruling on whether National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Shaun Abrahams was validly appointed before deciding on his future.

EWN reporter Barry Bateman says the initial decision was handed by the High Court in Pretoria to strike Jiba and Mrwebi from the role of advocates.

There was also a move by Freedom Under Law (FUL) to force former president Jacob Zuma's hand into initiating a disciplinary inquiry into the pair related to the previous court judgement which the general counsel of the bar had essentially relied upon to obtain this striking off order.

Barry Batemen, EWN Reporter

What has happened in that particular instance is that the former president had launched an appeal against the FUL order saying that he would rather wait for the general counsel of the bar matter to run its course.

Barry Batemen, EWN Reporter

What has happened now is that announcement from Cyril Ramaphosa saying he is going to withdraw that appeal, this is essentially opening up the way for the president to initiate that disciplinary hearing that his predecessor declined to do.
