Wits appoints first black woman as Chancellor

Dr Judy Dlamini has been appointed as the new chancellor of Wits University, making her the first black female in the position at the institution.

Dr Dlamini is a medical doctor‚ businesswoman‚ author and philanthropist.

In taking on this new role, Dr Dlamini will become the titular head of the institution.

Chancellorship is a voluntary position which has a six-year term of office.

Dr Dlamini says while it is a ceremonial position she will work with other members of the Wits community.

Because you actually want to assist and ensure that brand Wits is retained where it is which is respected globally but also bring yourself because, in every leadership position, you bring your value system, you bring what you believe in.

And one of those things for me is an inclusive culture which we are still grappling with in this country where it doesn't really matter what your colour is, it doesn't matter what your gender is, it doesn't matter what your social orientation is, but when you get into the space you feel you belong and you don't have to wear a mask to try to be what you are not.
